Peter Gilchrist defeated Steve Mifsud 591-369 in the final of the 2025 World Billiards Sydney Open at Club Marconi in Sydney, Australia.

The success for the Singapore representative saw him successfully defend the crown he won twelve months ago and earn his first ranking event title of the year.

A total of 32 cueists from three nations contested the second ranking event of the season and top seed Gilchrist comfortably advanced to the knockout stages with a clean sweep of victories in the group.

A visit of 307 in his group stage victory over Ireland’s David Walsh proved to be the highest of the event and the former world champion continued his dominant form as he swept aside the Australian duo of Steve Murphy and Vic Cravino to reach the semi-finals.

In the last four, he faced Australia’s Grant Meadley who proved to be Gilchrist’s toughest challenge of the weekend in a low-scoring contest where top breaks of 54 and 51 were enough to secure a winning margin of 105 points.

Former snooker professional Mifsud was the opponent in the title match after he had beaten Walsh, Wayne Carey and Joe Minici to book his place in the title match.

Gilchrist was taking part in his seventh ranking final of the 2024/25 campaign and he was made to work hard by Mifsud. Two century breaks, including a 179, ultimately proved to be the difference however as Gilchrist ran out the victor by 222 points to successfully defend the title in Sydney.

Peter Gilchrist plays a shot.

The next event on the World Billiards calendar is the Club 200 Open at Club 200 in Manchester, England on 1-2 March 2025.
