The World Snooker Federation (WSF) has today reached the significant landmark of five years since it was formalised as an International Federation for snooker, registered in Lausanne, Switzerland, close to the home of the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

Originally, the WSF was a loosely formed concept between amateur snooker and professional snooker dating back many years. The WSF was later formalised as a Swiss IF on 5 October 2017 with a vision for strong governance and a joined-up approach for amateur snooker globally. Following the withdrawal of the amateur arm at the time, the WPBSA has and will continue to provide a strong framework delivering a strong code of governance for amateur snooker tasked with creating clear pathways to the World Snooker Tour.

The WSF is today recognised by snooker’s world governing body the WPBSA and hosts the most prestigious international amateur events in the world, including the WSF Championship and WSF Junior Championships. Each tournament provides an official pathway to the professional World Snooker Tour.

The WSF also plays a key role in promoting diversity and inclusion within our sport, with strong links to disability snooker, women’s snooker, seniors snooker and English billiards.

Jason Ferguson, WSF President said: “Today represents a significant milestone in the journey of the WSF, which has become a crucial bridge between the professional World Snooker Tour and the many amateur organisations around the world.

“Five years on, the WSF continues to play a key role in the development of snooker and billiards globally, something which will continue to grow stronger with the support of our partners and those who share our vision. Our vision has always been to remove barriers to enter the sport and see an open sport for all, no matter of age, gender, nationality or where you are living.

“On behalf of the WPBSA Group of organisations, I would like to express our sincere thanks to the players, referees, officials, volunteers, administrators and to our own WSF board members for their incredible commitment in playing a key role in developing this beautiful sport around all parts of the world.”

The 2023 WSF Championships are set to take place in Sydney, Australia at the Mounties Club from 31 January – 11 February and entry is already open via WPBSA SnookerScores.
