Wehrmann Wins a Fourth Dutch Title

Former professional player Mario Wehrmann defeated Jack Bruins 5-1 in the final to claim his fourth Dutch National Snooker Championship – two decades on from winning his third. 

A total of 98 players took part in the 35th edition of the national championship. Held at the Westend Snooker venue in Zaandam and organised by the national governing body the KNBB, the championship was held over two weekends with the groups and early rounds taking place during the opening days.

Wehrmann – a competitor on the sport’s top tier for eight seasons – qualified for the knockout phase where he defeated Henk Van Der Plujim 3-0, Dennis Van Der Zee 4-2, Shahzeb Kamal 4-1, and Bram Hofland 4-1 before dethroning defending champion Rene van Rijsbergen 4-3 in the semi-finals. Five-time champion van Rijsbergen had been looking to equal Raymon Fabrie’s all-time record title haul of six.

On the other side of the draw, Bruins made his way through to the final for the first time, eliminating six-time Mosconi Cup 9-ball winner Nick Van Den Berg 4-2 in the last eight and Jasha Kiers 4-2 in the last four.

However, 47-year-old Wehrmann from The Hague was not to be denied another title as he ran out a comfortable victor to add to his previous wins from 1992, 1995 and 2002.
