Vinnie Calabrese Wins Back-To-Back Q Tour Titles
Vinnie Calabrese came from 3-0 down to defeat Adrian Law in the final of the third Q Tour Asia-Pacific event in Calamvale, Australia.
The victory secured back-to-back Q Tour titles for Calabrese, who was also victorious in the second event held in October, and confirmed his qualification for the Global Play-Off which takes place in Bosnia & Herzegovina in March.
Known as the Dr Clem Jones AO Queensland Open, the tournament saw 71 players from Australia, New Zealand and China compete for the title at the Matchroom Snooker Centre.
Calabrese was seeded through to the last 32 and kicked off his campaign with a whitewash 3-0 victory over Ian Lee courtesy of three half-century breaks, before following this up with a 4-2 win over Deepakh Bala to book his place in the quarter-finals. There, the former main tour professional offered up his most impressive performance of the event in a 4-1 win over Shaun Dalitz that featured breaks of 134 and 100.
Victory over Paul Norris by the same scoreline in the semi-finals set up a meeting in the final with Adrian Law, who had defeated Shaun Wang, Peter Kitchener, David Wright and Xavier Daw to reach his first Q Tour final of the series.
Calabrese was no doubt the favourite heading into the title match but it was Law who charged into a 3-0 lead, confining his opponent to just 58 points across the opening three frames of the contest.
The event two winner hit back, however, taking the next three frames to level the match before moving ahead for the first time by winning the seventh.
A break of 50 in frame eight was enough to secure back-to-back titles for Calabrese, who ends the Q Tour Asia-Pacific series as the top ranked player and qualifies along with event one winner and second-ranked Rob Redgrove for the Global Play-Off in March, where three World Snooker Tour cards will be on offer.
