Joy in Jersey for David Causier
David Causier defeated Robert Hall 619-451 in the final of the Jersey Open to win his fifth World Billiards ranking event title of the year.
The 50-year-old Englishman continued his fine form from last month’s double-header in Ireland, where he lifted both the Irish Open and World Matchplay titles, to secure further success at the Jersey Mechanics Institute in St Helier.
Last held in 2022, the Jersey Open carried level 5 ranking event status for the first time this year and saw 40 cueists competing as part of centenary celebrations for the Jersey Billiards and Snooker Association.
Causier, the second seed behind reigning world champion Peter Gilchrist, stormed to a clean sweep of victories in the initial group phase – winning the four contests by a remarkable aggregate scoreline of 4,175-293.
A duo of 239 breaks then helped Causier to comfortably overcome Austria’s Martin Schmidt before further victories over Nathan Mann and fourth seed Peter Sheehan sealed his place in the title match.
There he would meet Hall who had recorded impressive victories over Martin Goodwill, the man responsible for ending the hopes of defending champion Darren Clark at the last 16 stage, and top seed Gilchrist to reach the final.
The final was a close affair with Hall recording a visit of 259 to keep his hopes alive, but ultimately Causier once again proved too strong as a break of 374 and a further unfinished visit of 143 was enough for the Englishman to secure the title by a winning margin of 168 points.
