Bio

Hong Kong’s most successful ever player, Marco Fu is a three-time ranking event winner who has reached at least the semi-final stage of each of snooker’s triple crown events.

Fu has been a mainstay on the professional circuit since 1998 when at the Grand Prix he reached the final to become the lowest ranked finalist at any ranking event (337th), losing 9-2 to Stephen Lee.

It would not be until nine years later at the same tournament that Fu would go one better as he defeated Ronnie O’Sullivan 9-6 in Aberdeen to claim his first ranking title.

He has since gone on to add further victories at the Australian Goldfields Open and Scottish Open, making 11 century breaks at the latter as he dominated the tournament from start to finish.

He has twice reached the semi-finals of the World Championship, losing in a deciding-frame to Peter Ebdon in 2006 before also losing a close match 17-15 to Mark Selby a decade later in 2016.

In 2008 he contested the UK Championship final with Shaun Murphy, losing 10-9 in Telford, before also reaching the final of the Masters in 2011, only to lose to Ding Junhui.

Fu has been ranked as high as fifth in the world during the 2017 season but has subsequently seen his career affected by retinal degeneration and floaters in his left-eye, for which he underwent laser surgery at the end of that year.

He was unable to compete during the 2020/21 season due to Covid restrictions, however was awarded an Invitational Tour Card by WST for the following two seasons to remain on tour.

In October 2022, Fu defeated Mark Selby and John Higgins – the latter with a stunning 147 break during the deciding-frame – to reach the final of the invitational Hong Kong Masters against Ronnie O’Sullivan, which attracted a world record snooker crowd of over 9,000 fans.

Amateur Career

During his amateur career Fu won both the world and world under-21 titles in 1997 prior to earning his place on the World Snooker Tour.
