David Causier defeated Pankaj Advani 8-7 in an epic final of the 2025 World Billiards World Matchplay Championship to successfully defend his crown.

The prestigious Level 6 ranking event was staged at the SBI Academy in Carlow, Ireland and a total of 50 cueists from across the globe embarked on the venue for the week-long tournament.

Causer came into the World Matchplay Championship on the back of lifting the Irish Open title the previous week as part of a double-header encompassing both events.

The reigning World Billiards champion and defending World Matchplay champion dominated his group with a clean sweep of victories before following this up with a 5-0 win over Ryan Mears to reach the quarter-finals.

A 6-3 defeat of compatriot Peter Sheehan set up a last four meeting with fellow former world champion Peter Gilchrist, who Causier comfortably overcame 7-2 to reach the title match.

India’s Advani was the final opponent for Causier after he beat Siddharth Parikh (5-1), Robert Hall (6-2) and Shrikrishna Suri (7-5) to book his place in the final.

The best-of-15 final contest was a battle between two high-quality competitors and it deservedly came down to a decider at 7-7. Causier was able to hold his nerve, however, to get over the line and complete a successful double in Ireland.
