Hong Yu Liu reached the semi-finals of the 2023 English Open on his debut professional season with victories over two former world champions en route.
A remarkable run saw Hong defeat Shaun Murphy in the qualifying round before overcoming Joe O’Connor, Chris Wakelin, Mark Williams and Ding Junhui to reach the last four where he was defeated 6-2 by fellow countryman Zhang Anda.
The previous season, Hong defeated Wang Yuchen 6-1 in the final of the 2023 Asia-Pacific Championship in New Zealand to turn professional for the first time.
Earlier in 2023, Hong also reached the quarter-finals of the World Snooker Federation Championship in Australia, losing to compatriot and eventual champion Ma Hai Long.
The 2024/25 season saw Hong continue to impress as he reached the last 32 of the Saudi Arabia Masters and last 16 of the World Open.
