Wu Yize defeated World Champion Zhao Xintong 3-1 to win Group Six, but it was his opponent who crafted a maiden career 147 break earlier in the day at the BetVictor Championship League Invitational.
Zhao’s magnificent maximum came in the opening frame of his 3-0 semi-final win over Jak Jones. It’s the first of the Crucible king’s career and incredibly takes the tour’s total tally for the season to 21. The previous record for a single campaign was last season’s total of 15. There have now been 238 maximum breaks in professional snooker history.
That break comes off the back of two maximums made yesterday, by Xiao Guodong and Zhao’s opponent in today’s final Wu. The recently crowned International Champion crafted runs of 91 and 98 en route to a 3-0 semi-final win over Zhang Anda this evening.
The final saw Wu cruise to a place in the Winner’s Group next month. Breaks of 52, 127 and 80 were enough to see him get over the line and defeat his Chinese compatriot.
Group Seven kicks off tomorrow, with Jones and Zhang joined by Jack Lisowski, Lei Peifan, Jimmy Robertson, Xu Si and Ryan Day.
