Yesterday I looked ahead to next weekend’s Kreativ Dental Gdynia Open and how that tournament will determine the final places for the new World Grand Prix, but the tournament will also be crucial as we will learn which 24 players will join the eight already qualified from the Asian Order of Merit, at next month’s Players Championship Grand Finals.
Arguably the biggest tournament remaining this season aside from the World Championship, as it stands the top 23 on the European Order of Merit published after the Lisbon Open will qualify, in addition to 26th placed Fergal O’Brien.
This is because Joe Perry is currently holding on to 24th position and with both he and 25th placed Stuart Bingham having already qualified through the Asian Order of Merit, the place will go down to the Irishman.
With five players within a single win of overtaking Fergal in Gdynia and a further three within two victories however, the Irishman is not safe yet and neither are some of the names immediately above him, such as Michael Wasley, Mark Williams Neil Robertson, Marco Fu and Mark King.
With so many players still able to break into the top 24, it is impossible to determine exactly who is already safe, but this is something that we will be able to keep track of throughout the tournament in Gdynia.
The professional stages of the 2015 Kreativ Dental Gdynia Open will take place from 27 February until the 1 March 2015.
