David Causier Captures Irish Open Crown
David Causier defeated Peter Gilchrist 1127-115 to lift the 2024 Sammin Engineering Irish Open title in Carlow, Ireland.
The 50-year-old Englishman fired in breaks of 670, 475 and 405 as he stormed through the field to secure his third ranking event title of the year.
Held at the SBI Academy in Carlow, Ireland as part of the annual double-header alongside the prestigious Macau Casino World Matchplay, a total of 49 players competed in the level three world ranking event.
Causier, who had already won the Scottish Open and Austrian Open since the turn of the year, dominated his initial group stage with a quartet of victories – including a stunning victory over hometown cueist Robert McCrum in a contest that saw the Englishman fire in three breaks over 200.
Two more Irishmen fell at the hands of Causier in the knockout stages as the eventual champion defeated Wayne Doyle and Aidan Murray to book his place in the semi-finals.
An incredible run of 670 points, the highest break of the tournament, saw Causier then beat world number three Robert Hall by a scoreline of 952-226 to book a final meeting with reigning World champion Gilchrist.
The Singaporean had overcome Alex Puan, Darren Clark and Christian Kirk to set up a repeat of last year’s Irish Open final in which Gilchrist had been victorious.
Causier was out for revenge in the 90-minute final and found it in style as a break of 475 helped the former World champion on his way to an utterly dominant victory by a margin of more than 1000 points.
