Bio

Tian Pengfei reached the semi-finals of a ranking event for the first time at the 2023 Welsh Open in Llandudno.

Having qualified with victory against Michael Holt, the Chinese player recorded a string of impressive victories against Jimmy White, Ali Carter, John Higgins and most impressively Ronnie O’Sullivan – who he whitewashed 5-0 – to reach the last four.

Despite defeat to eventual champion Robert Milkins, the run was enough to help Tian rise to a new career-high world ranking of number 41.

Prior to the 2022/23 season, Tian had reached the quarter-finals of four world ranking events from 2017-2019.

In 2019 Tian qualified for the televised stages of the World Championship at the Crucible for the first time, losing 10-9 to Stephen Maguire. He would return two years later in 2021, losing at the same stage to four-time world champion John Higgins.

He previously reached the final of the Ruhr Open, a minor ranking event which formed part of the European Tour in 2015, losing 4-2 to Rory McLeod.

Having spent two seasons as a professional from 2006, Tian successfully came through Q School in 2011 to regain his main tour place.
