David Causier defeated Peter Gilchrist 1,051-122 in the final of the 2024 English Open to successfully defend the title he won twelve months ago at the Landywood Snooker Club in Walsall, England.
For the second year in a row, the World Billiards ranking event was staged as a precursor for the 2024 World Billiards Championship which takes place from 28-31 October at the same venue in Staffordshire.
A total of 60 cueists competed in the two-day tournament and England’s Causier successfully advanced from his initial group phase with a clean sweep of victories over Robert Marshall, David Gillingham, Terry McAdam and Jimmy Gratton.
A top break of 450, one of three contributions over 400 from Causier in the event, helped him to a 951-160 win against John Mullane in the last 16 before he overcame Jason Goodwin and Peter Sheehan in dominant fashion to reach the title match.
The final saw a repeat of the last two world finals as the two favourites for the upcoming World Billiards Championship, Causier and Gilchrist, one again faced off for glory.
Singapore’s Gilchrist had beaten Barry Russell, Jonathan Marwood and Robert Hall in the knockout phase but was only able to muster up a high break of 73 against Causier as the Englishman hit breaks of 486, 212 and 150 en route to a dominant victory by a margin of 929 points.
The 2024 World Billiards Championship takes place on 28-31 October and you can watch the action from Table 1 and 2 live on the World Billiards YouTube Channel.
