WPBSA AGM News
The World Professional Billiards and Snooker Association held its Annual General Meeting in Scotland on Wednesday.
Nigel Mawer QPM stood for re-election to the board as a director. Shaun Murphy also stood for election to the board for the first time. Ahead of the AGM, Alan McManus offered his resignation from the board, which was accepted.
The results of the vote were:
Nigel Mawer QPM 16 for, 1 abstention.
Shaun Murphy 16 for, 1 against.
Both Nigel Mawer QPM and Shaun Murphy were appointed.
WPBSA Chairman Jason Ferguson said: “I am delighted that Nigel has been re-appointed to the board. Since he joined us in 2011 he has provided valuable expertise in sports governance and integrity. He has played and will continue to play a key role in our sport internationally, not only within the WPBSA and its group of organisations, but also the World Snooker Federation of which he was recently appointed to its board.
“I am also pleased to welcome Shaun to the board. I have known him since he was very young and seen him develop within our great sport to where he is today. He is the consummate professional and his terrific record on the table speaks for itself. He remains an active current player at the peak of his powers as demonstrated by his run to the final of the UK Championship only last weekend. He also heads up our Players Commission as its Chair, a crucial role in bringing the views of the Membership to the board.
“I would like to thank Alan for the time he has spent with us and the valuable contribution that he has made. We appreciate his time commitments, we all enjoy his TV commentary and we hope that one day he will return to the WPBSA with more time where he can contribute further.”
Nigel Mawer said: “I am honoured to be re-elected to the WPBSA Board at such an exciting time for the sport. I think it is very positive that the membership clearly recognises the importance of good governance in professional sport. I am looking forward to continue playing my part in this great sport.”
Shaun Murphy said: “I am very proud to have been voted onto the board of WPBSA and can’t wait to get started. As chairman of the Players Commission I now think we can make the Commission the power house it needs to be to represent the players effectively.”
Alan McManus said: “I have enjoyed my short time on the WPBSA board. There are lots of good initiatives happening in snooker right now and lots of good people in place to develop our already burgeoning sport. As the WPBSA board is mainly concentrated on the governance aspect of snooker I felt unable to influence the player’s needs as much as I had hoped.
“I know Shaun has been keen to be involved at board level for some time therefore I’ve decided to resign. I’m certain he will bring both enthusiasm and common sense to his new role and I wish him every success. I’d like to express my thanks and best wishes to my fellow board members for the warm welcome I received. I have assured them of my continued support and assistance whenever required.”
