Following the outcome of the independent tribunal involving Mark King, WPBSA Players (the players’ association) acknowledge the decision of the independent Disciplinary Commission announced yesterday.

The WPBSA Players Board of Directors is extremely saddened by the actions of Mark King, who has been found guilty of such serious breaches of the WPBSA rules.

WPBSA Players has provided practical support to Mark during the case to ensure that he had a clear understanding of the process, access to counselling and assistance in finding legal representation.

Whilst we recognise that Mark has the right to appeal this decision, he will now likely face a period of reflection and need to come to terms with the impact his actions have had on his own career, his fellow players, friends and family, and the credibility of sport generally. WPBSA Players will continue to communicate with Mark from a welfare perspective and facilitate him the option to assist the WPBSA in its anti-corruption and player education efforts.

WPBSA Players wish to acknowledge the work of the WPBSA and its partners in bringing the case to a conclusion and seeking to protect the integrity of snooker in the interests of all its members who continue to play by the rules with passion and commitment to the game of snooker.

Shaun Murphy, chairman of WPBSA Players said, “It is with regret that Mark and the game of snooker are in the difficult position we find ourselves, but lessons must be taken from this. We are committed to taking positive action to respond and will continue to review our procedures and education process in helping to ensure that players avoid making the same mistakes in the future.”
